Incense Cones.

Ingredients

8 tsp. Sandalwood Powder

1tsp. Musk Scented Talc Powder

2 tsp. Frankincense Powder

1 tsp Gum Benzoin Powder

1/2 tsp Gum Tragacanth Powder

2 tsp Liquid Paraffin

10 Drops Each of Lavender, Clove and Rosemary oil

1/4 tsp saltpetre dissolved in 3 tbsp of water.

Ideally moulded into small cones on a bright, dry day with very low humidity. This will help to dry them out very quickly.

Mix together all the dry ingredients. Add liquid Paraffin and essential oils and begin to stir the mixture together.

Add Saltpetre solution one tablespoonful at a time for the first two tablespoons and then one teaspoon at a time, mixing with your fingers after each addition to ensure the mixture sticks together well without becoming too wet.

Knead until smooth and can be rolled easily into a ball.

On a wooden board divide the Incense into 32 even-sized pieces. Form each into a tall, thin cone shape 3-4cm in height. Press the cones wide end down onto a board. Leave in a warm, dry place for 1 hour. Place them on their sides and leave for another hour. Turn them over several times during the next 24 hours. They will be completely dry when they have shrunk slightly, turned a lighter colour and feel firm to the touch when lightly squeezed. Store carefully in airtight plastic bags or jars.

Know your Woods.

Here's a little verse that will help you remember each wood properties and qualities.

Oak shall warm you

Thats old and dry;

Logs of pine, so sweet to smell,

But beware the sparks that fly.

Now Birch will burn too rapidly,

And Chesnut scarce at all,

 Hawthorn logs last endlessly,

Cut them when the leaves do fall.

Holly logs burn like wax

And Elm logs can be likened to smouldering wax.

Kyphi Incense.

Kyphi Incense.

Kyphi is an ancient and potent Egyptian Incense recipe long used

by Initiates in Ceremony and Ritual.

Kyphi Incense
4 raisins
1/2 teaspoon frankincense
1 tablespoon red wine
1/2 teaspoon benzoin
1 teaspoon sandalwood
1/4 teaspoon myrrh
1/4 teaspoon juniper berries
1/4 teaspoon dragon’s blood
1/4 teaspoon orris root
1/2 teaspoon honey
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

Soak the raisins in the red wine overnight.

Using a mortar and pestle, individually grind the sandalwood, juniper berries, orris root, and cinnamon. In a large wooden or ceramic bowl, mix the dry ingredients together.

Using a mortar and pestle, individually pulverize the frankincense, benzoin, myrrh, and dragon’s blood into small granules. Add the resins and gums to the powder mixture.

Drain the red wine from the raisins and mash the raisins with the mortar and pestle. Add the raisins and honey to the dough. Knead thoroughly with your hands, then form the dough into pea-sized balls. Spread the balls out on wax paper and store them indoors away from direct sunlight and moisture. Turn the balls daily for one to two weeks, depending on the climate. Once they are dry, store your Kyphi balls in a sealed plastic bag or glass jar. Smolder the incense balls one or two at a time over charcoal.

Tea Light Candles.

How to Make Tealight Candles

by Dolores Attwood

Tea light candles are fun and relatively simple to make and once you begin, you'll be making many of your own candles in next to no time.

Equipment Tips for Tealight Candles

Apart from your normal stock of candle making supplies, the only addition you need for making tealight candles are a selection of aluminum or plastic tealight cups available from any craft or grocery store.

To prepare your tealight cups place them on a flat and level work surface and set your wicks into each.

You can either use pre-tabbed tea light wicks or prepare your own from 34-24 cotton core waxed wicks.

Set the tabbed tealight wicks in the tea light cups. Try to get them in the center, although during the pour they will probably shift to one side a little unless you secure them with a small amount of hot glue at the base.

Tealight candles can be found almost everywhere, from church entrance halls, to restaurants and people's living rooms. There really is no limit to possible uses of a set of well made tealight candles.

Troubleshooting Tips for Tea light Candles

Do you have a smoking candle? If your candle is smoking heavily then it's more than likely that your wick is too large for your candle. First try trimming your candles wick which may be successful. If your candle continues to smoke after trimming its wick, you'll have to use a smaller wick next time you make that particular candle.

Does your flame flicker and splutter? If your flame flickers and sputters, water is either trapped in the wick, possible from a water bath (if you used one), or there is water in the wax. Make sure that the wick hole in your mold is completely sealed and be careful not to let any water from your double boiler get into the wax.
